Sea Sick Medicine, Evans Olang

Philippians 4:6-7, “6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

It is easy to do things when you feel like it, this journey is not about feelings but discipline. Getting in the presence of God and praying is hard but there is such a great joy when you do it. How often do we first try to do something, when it does not work we remember to pray? I think it’s a guy thing. Women are quick to ask for direction when they get lost, men try hard to find their way and sometimes get frustrated when encouraged to ask for directions. I struggle with bible reading and praying in my walk too, however I keep striving

In Luke 8:24, Jesus told His disciples, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake” and they launched out. It was Jesus idea to cross over with them. To move from familiar to the unfamiliar; from what they knew to do to what they did not know. There are people who get sea sick in the water and there are people who are afraid of heights. Few are afraid of the ground because the ground is solid and you trust it to hold you. You do not need help with what you know, it’s what you don’t know that gives you anxiety. You may try to get assistance after failing to do it yourself. In this case, everything seemed to be going as planned with Jesus in the innermost parts of the ship sleeping. The disciples seemed to have had everything under control, when all of a sudden there came a storm. In the midst of the storm, they tried to do everything they knew how to so as to steady the ship, and when all failed they remembered Jesus on board … vs. “24, And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!”. Philippians 4:6, says “Be anxious for nothing” these men were anxious (very worried); they did not even stop to calm themselves down. All that consumed their mind was drowning. They had faith in Jesus but that faith seemed to have leaped out the hour they needed it the most. Our faith should not disappear in the storm, if anything, that is the time we need it the most. Had they meditated on the fact that Jesus was on board, they would have not been worried, in fact it should have increased their faith. Think of it this way, if the storm came so strong, do you think Jesus would have drowned? Can God drown? That truth should have been enough to build their faith. “…but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God”. Instead of freaking out and trying to do it themselves they could have called on Jesus on board. “in everything by prayer”, not some things. At times we feel like He is far away when we are in a storm, when in actual sense, He is with us and in us, He is on board. These men had an urgent need; their cry to Jesus was earnest and fervent. They called on Him, but what took them so long to do it in the first place? Simple, they tried doing it themselves. The bible says Romans 10:13, “For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

vs. “7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus”. Jesus woke up and first dealt with the situation, He said to the wind, Mark 4:39, “…Peace, be still”. This was more than peace to the storm but also peace to the disciples. This is the peace that originates with God, it is the peace which makes no sense. They getting caught up in what had just happened spoke these words to themselves, “What manner of Man is this that even the winds obey His voice“, (paraphrased).

Why peace and not deliverance? Peace can make you comfortable in a storm. Jesus was comfortable, sleeping peacefully in the ship knowing that He could never drown. When He woke up, He didn’t even make the ship move faster to the land. He wasn’t going to be subject to the situation, the situation was going to be subject to Him. Showing the wind who is in charge. Jesus presence was peace alone they needed in the storm. After what they went through, you don’t hear them hurrying back to land to avoid another storm. They had a journey started and yet to be finished so they needed to ride through by faith in Him who was on board. Philippians 4:6&7 is our sea sick medication. Blessings Ev

  1. Jesus healed many persons, but he could only do that by his Father, who is the greatest Healer of all. To Jehovah God we should say thanks, for everything the earth provides and for the restoration his son was allowed to bring to this world.
