Luke 5:1-7, “But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net”
Having tackled the challenges in the last part, let me share a few thoughts to prep us for the days, weeks and even months to come. We looked at 4 men who had toiled all night fishing only to catch nothing.
How did it all start, lets read in Luke 5:1, ” 1 So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret“. Peter at this point had not received his calling to be one of Jesus’ disciples and so we see here that those who followed Christ desired to hear more of His teachings and He led them by the lake just where the discouraged Peter and His friends were washing their nets. I can only imagine Peter and the rest looking at the multitude they could have sold fish to and how that morning could have been a booming business for them. The people who followed Jesus were going to be hungry at some point. What did Christ do with His followers first, He fed them with Spiritual word. He came right where Peter was, and perhaps that morning the message was specifically for Peter. Point no. 1, are you going to press in to study and feed on God’s word even more? That you will esteem His word more than your necessary food? That His word will be more precious to you than anything else in spite of what comes your way? The multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God. God first!!, Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Vs. 3.”Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land…. “, As Jesus came by the lake with the multitude, He entered Simon’s boat and asked him to push it a little into the water. Jesus needed the boat not to fish but to use it as a pulpit to teach. The boat was not built for that purpose yet the Lord used it for that purpose. Point no. 2. Are you willing to give the Lord everything about your life and say “Lord use it whichever way you want to for your glory?”, and not feel like trying to make a deal with the Lord that He can bless you after He has used what you gave Him? Peter was giving the boat for the use in his disappointment expecting nothing in return. Why? Because Christ was worthy of his obedience. It’s all His and we give back to the Lord what He requires for His glory.
Vs. 3,” …And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat”. Who knows what the Master taught on that day, perhaps on faith. Peter though at a distance must have listened to every word. The bible says in Romans 10:17, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”, Point no 3. Are you determined to hear and live by faith? Now faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God which would mean more than reading, more than hearing a nice sermon. It will be as James says in James 1:22, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves”. Faith is waiting for God’s timing without doubting His love and ability. Blessings, Ev
