Understanding Is Revelation, Evans Olang

Luke 24:44-45, “44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures” (NIV)

What troubled me for a while was listening to a very learned person misunderstand scriptures. I mean someone with more degrees than a thermometer read a scripture passage and miss the whole point of the passage. They get everything else but the scripture despite the fact they have read it over and over again. How many times have we also read verses after verses and it was plain, then one day as we were reading it again, it became alive. Anyone can read the scriptures, only God can give understanding to His Word. The devil knows the scriptures, he tempted Jesus with it, the only thing he does not understand it.

Understanding is revelation only God gives to those whom He has opened their hearts. As I have said already, we can hear the word or even read it yet without understanding, it will not make sense or be of any benefit to us. Jesus shared with His disciples of the things that were to be fulfilled. They heard what He said but it did not make sense to them. They even forgot what He said. Then after it was all fulfilled, He reminded them again of what He had told them and the bible adds another verse to show us something profound, vs. 45 “Then He opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures”

I don’t want to read for the sake of reading, I want to read with understanding and understanding is revelation from God. Do you know “salvation is revelation”? It is revelation that comes about where God takes His spoken Word and makes it alive in a person He is saving so that they understand who they are as sinners and what He has done for them in Christ and they respond in repentance and faith. In Acts 8, we are told of how God sent Phillip the evangelist to meet an Ethiopian Eunuch whose heart was open to read God’s word. Acts 8:30-31, “30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him”. This man was reading with no understanding until God sent Phillip,vs. 35 “Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him”. Only God could give understanding of the scripture through Phillip to this man because God opened His heart.

We have another example in Acts 16:14, “Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul”. Paul’s preaching would have no bearing on Lydia unless the Lord opened her heart as He did. If God opened our hearts to heed to the gospel, are we continuing to pray that He opens our hearts to understand what we are reading? You could be reading the bible for the sake of reading it, are you praying for understanding (revelation)? That His word becomes alive in you. The word is ever alive, my question to us all, is it alive in US? 1John 5:20, “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life”, blessings Ev
