2Corinthians 3:4-6, “4 And we have such trust through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life”
The battle we all have is where does our sufficiency come from? It is easy to say your sufficiency comes from Christ however your talk and actions may suggest different. Sufficiency simply means adequate or enough to meet a purpose. Is Christ adequate and enough or do we look to other places?
At the beginning of this chapter, even the appearance of self-praise and courting human applause, is painful to the humble and spiritual mind. Nothing is more delightful to faithful ministers, or more to their praise, than the success of their ministry, as shown in the spirits and lives of those among whom they labor. Yet they understand that it’s not by their own strength or ability they are able to do it but by the power of God in them because they have considered Him sufficient to accomplish His work through them.
God’s word is sufficient , 2Peter 1:2-4, “2 grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust”. For this reason, Christ and His word does not become secondary but primary issue. We don’t look to the world and it’s philosophies to define us and how we do things, we look to Christ and His revealed word to live by and do His work. As Paul Washer in one of his messages once said, “Over the last several decades there has been a mighty battle with regard to the inspiration of Scripture. But there is only one problem. When you come to believe as a people that the Bible is inspired, you have only fought half the battle because the question is not merely is the Bible inspired, is it inerrant? The major question following that must be answered: Is the Bible sufficient or do we have to bring in every so called social science and cultural study in order to know how to run a church? That is a major question”. Many are turning away from the sufficiency of the scripture to embrace the worlds’ experts on how to grow a church, do evangelism, teach on marriages, raise children. Most Christian bookstores are filled with self-help books with little pointing it’s readers to study the word of God. They don’t deny that the Bible is inspired or inherent, they just don’t believe it is sufficient to address the issues that affect them and would rather turn to experts with more degrees than a thermometer. Don’t get me wrong, God may use them and has done but as a means. We believe they are instruments in God’s hand and not the source and the outcome of things.
Praying effectively, preaching, living, etc. is not about ABILITY, it is about AVAILABILITY. Example, a guitar has no ability to tune itself and play on its own. The dead guitar comes alive when it is placed in the hands of a skillful player who knows how best to tune it and play it. He tunes it and makes his own sweet music filled with harmony because it is in the right hands. The music is therefore not credited to the guitar but to the one who plays it. That is the same with us, when we avail ourselves, the Holy Spirit takes us, tunes us by God’s word and plays His own tune of prayer, preaching, living how best He wants us to, and Christ is exalted while God the Father is glorified. 2Corinthians 4:7, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us”. We sound better because our sufficiency is from God and the credit goes back to Him.
Confidence toward God is solid and real, as looking to Him for the strength needed now, and also for the reward of grace to be given hereafter. Any teacher, books, experts who are not turning us to the sufficiency of the scripture robs us and more so God 2Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”. Our sufficiency is from God, His word can be trusted”, blessings Ev
