Psalm 23:1-6, vs. 1” The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

Psalm 23 is one of the most quoted Psalm especially in difficult times. Many of David’s psalms are full of complaints, but this is full of comforts, and the expressions of delight in God’s great goodness and dependence upon Him. In this Psalm, David pictures the Lord not as a doctor or lawyer or employer, he pictures the Lord as a Shepherd, something he was once. He draws from his experience in tending to the sheep where he would do anything for his sheep and in this reality trusting the Lord to be to him what he was to his sheep, a shepherd. Psalm 23:2, “He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters”

We take comfort in knowing that as believers we are cared for. Even in those times when it seems all hell is breaking loose, we “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;” Philippians 1:6
We see this clearly stated in the 2nd verse of Psalm 23, “He makes me to lie down in green pastures;…” Remember the Israelites had what they needed right in the desert where nothing grows. God provided for them, God sustained them. We have the supports and comforts of this life from God’s good hand, our daily bread from Him as our Father. Of course there is more to it than our physical needs. If anything, His daily Word ought to be the green pasture we should focus on, to feed on and to rest on His promises.
