Acts 12:5-6, “Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. And when Herod was about to bring him out, that night Peter was sleeping, bound with two chains between two soldiers; and the guards before the door were keeping the prison.”

Times of adversity have a way of testing our faith.  What do you do when adversity strikes?  Do you run away, pray, complain, and become depressed?  The gospel message that is preached by many at this time is this, “God has a wonderful plan for your life.”   Read the rest of this entry »

2Timothy 3:10-17, “10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me”

The motivation to be a man of God and fulfill for all these is LOVE. Love is fueled by PERSEVARANCE, you see them side by side. Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”. Jesus demonstrated His love by dying for us, Paul demonstrated his love by living for Him. 2Corinthians 5:14-15,14 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” This love is not devoid of truth. He was showing Timothy that everything he did, be it preaching, correcting, taking men like him under his wings, confronting men like Peter, it was all motivated by love. That love was to bring unity because it all centered on the foundation of truth. To the Ephesians, he talks about how God has gifted men differently. Read the rest of this entry »

Under endurance, I group “faith, longsuffering (patience), love, perseverance, persecutions, afflictions” together because they bond or are under the umbrella on this word endurance . What is endurance?- the capacity of something to last or withstand wear and tear, 2Timothy 2:3, Matthew 24:13, Jude 1:24 (PRESERVATION), Luke 22:31-32 (Jesus prayed that Peter’s faith would endure through preservation), 1Corinthians 13:4-7 (love chapter).

When Paul talks to Timothy about his “faith”, he is talking more than belief. He is referring to the evidence of faith, enduring faith. He knows he is justified by faith apart from works, the evidence of that faith is the presence of works. He is echoing James message, “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also”, James 2:26. Read the rest of this entry »

We take a dive in a new series to deal with what it means to be a man of God from Paul’s life because he points us to someone greater than himself, Christ. In 1Corinthians 11:1, Paul writes, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (NIV 1984). In his final words to his son in the faith Timothy, he reminds him of what he had seen in this warrior of faith and to embrace and continue what he had learned from him.

Today a number of things would be considered in defining a real man. As my friend Pastor Phil shares, many men have taken the Hollywood version/mentality of what men are to be. Read the rest of this entry »

Paul in writing to Timothy he says, “you have carefully followed my…Manner of life…”. We learn some of the things shaped by his theology. Paul was a diligent praying man right from his conversion in Acts 9:11, his epistles opened with greetings and assurance that he was praying for those he wrote to.

He encouraged believers to pray, 1Timothy 2:1-3. Paul also surrounded himself with men who he encouraged (sharpened) and those who encouraged (sharpened) him in this journey, for example Onesiphorus, 2Timothy 1:16-17, “16 The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; 17 but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me”.
