Galatians 1:8-9, “8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
It is believed by some that there are about 20 – 30 gospels that have been written. When Christians think about the gospel what comes to mind? Perhaps some words like four, good news, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, etc…. However there are writings that some non-gospel writings that some claim have been cleverly left out of the Bible because of contradictions with the four books of the gospel. The Gospel of Thomas, Judas, and Mary are three to name a few. Unfortunately many Christians don’t know there Bible that well and are unfamiliar with church history. A few years back the famous book fad that came out was called the Bible Code. Now the Da Vinci Code and the Gospel of Judas are the latest fads.
Jesus said, “10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Jesus said, “THIS GOSPEL of THE KINGDOM WILL BE PREACHED…” The Law of God condemns all humanity and breaks the hard heart, but it is the gospel that heals the broken hearted. These other writings are not the gospel. The Gospel of Judas doesn’t even mention God’s Law which Jesus referred to all throughout His earthly ministry.
There is one gospel, the gospel according to Jesus. Paul said that if a man or even an angel from heaven preaches another gospel let him be accursed! Bankers can spot counterfeit currency because they spend so much time looking at the real thing. Let’s commit ourselves to looking into the real thing, and living that real thing, the gospel. We are called to know, do, and preach His Gospel. Do you have a love for what Jesus said? The very author of life has left us a life manual called the gospel. God has trusted His children with the gospel, to magnify it among the nations. Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news (gospel) to the poor [in spirit].” If the Spirit of the Lord is upon you, then you too are called to be one that proclaims this gospel. Since the world is interested in these gospel fads of Satan, why not use them as a springboard to bring the gospel to them?
If you know the gospel then may you proclaim as Paul “Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel.”
