Genesis 39:1-23, “And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand.”
What would you do if what you always dreamed for wasn’t coming to pass? instead of things getting better, you got further and further away from it. Joseph is a good example, he had a dream at the age of 17 and his dream was not that one day he would fail but that one day he will be great and that his family and many people would bow to him. Talk to any teenagers today and hear all their dreams and desires of success. You must have had dreams at that age too. Joseph had a good dream but he was naive, boastful and insensitive towards his brothers. He did not even realize that the dream was not about him but a picture of Christ. In his case, a lot of character building was needed before God fulfilled all that He planned.
Genesis 39:1, “Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an office of Pharaoh… brought him from Ishmaelites who had taken him down there“. He was brought to Egypt as a slave, bowing to someone else. What happened to the dream in which people would be bowing to him? It’s not surprising that some people become careless when things are not going as they planned and expected. They misuse what they have, they envy others, they treat the position they have casually, doing a poor job because that is not where they wanted to land. Sitting down and being lazy was not Joseph’s position, he was not where he desired to be but yet he was still faithful, hardworking, honest, efficient, effective, responsible and initiative in all he did. The bible says in vs. 2, “The Lord was with Joseph, and he was successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian”. You don’t hear a voice from heaven telling him how to live but you see the effects of how he lived because God was with him and gave him wisdom. Proverbs 2:6-8 reads, “For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints”. A number wait for a voice from heaven before they do things, however how come we don’t apply the same way when it comes to putting food on the table or roofs over our heads. We go out in the light of God’s word to look for jobs, and we trust His guidance and when we get the jobs, we work hard. That is wisdom, the wisdom of God, seeking to do good while not leaning on our own understanding, Proverbs 3:5.
Joseph had every opportunity to complain yet he chose to channel those opportunities to enlarge his character by serving faithfully, Philippians 2:14, “Do all things without complaining and disputing“. It’s like Joseph saying, “I am not where I desire to be and I don’t know if I will get there or not, one thing I know, I have responsibilities to my master and I will do it faithfully, do well and make my master proud“. I don’t believe the Lord told him what to do, he just saw an opportunity to serve and the Lord blessed him for being initiative. Later he was made overseer of the entire house of Potiphar, things were beginning to be better, he was good at what he is doing and the Lord was trully blessing the house. And then he lost his position because Potiphar’s wife. Once beaten and thrown in prison, someone would think he would stop being the man of character, but even in prison, he served, he was initiative and responsible. This allowed him to have favor with the keeper of prison and once again he was made in charge. He outshined them all.
Joseph allowed people to see the Lord in him by working hard, being responsible and being a man who was initiative. Whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper and so is with us today. You may not be where you want to be in career, relationship, job wise, position but you can still be all you can for God right where you are. Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him”,.. 23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”
Do not sit and wait for the Lord to bring you to your destiny when He has allowed you to be in a place for such as time as this to grow your character before He can enlarge you. You need to incorporate the word “Initiative” which means doing good things without being told but this begins with wisdom you can ask the Lord for. Do the best you can with all you have and the Lord will bless and prosper you in all you do. Blessings Evans
