Oil In The Lamp, Sarah Susan

Leviticus 24:1-2, “The Lord said to Moses “Command the Israelites to bring you clear oil of pressed olives for the light so that the lamps may be kept burning continually” images

What is clear oil? From is it derived from -olives? Olive has a special significance in the Bible. The oil can be extracted only if olive is pressed rather crushed /squeezed. This olive undergoes painful treatment for the core essence to get extracted, which in turn becomes the source of nourishment for many. This oil has to be used in the lamps so that they give light and can be kept burning continually.

Our Lord Jesus was crushed on the cruel cross of Calvary. Why? Isaiah answers according to Isaiah 53 “But he was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities” Yes the precious blood shed by our dear Lord is the only source for our lamps to keep burning till the end. Not just few drops of oil, but it needs to be poured substantially. His blood was poured out for you and me. A lamp is only an article in which oil should be poured in order to give light. Without this oil, it cannot serve the very purpose. The blood of Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith symbolizes the clear oil of pressed olives referred above.

Matthew 25 speaks about ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five of them were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps with them but not the oil whereas the wise ones took oil in jars along with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was a longtime in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight the cry rang out “Here is the bride groom Come out to meet him“. Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps, but the foolish ones realized only then that their lamps were going out because of lack of oil. Meanwhile before they could go and buy some oil, the bridegroom arrived and the wise could go with him to the wedding banquet and then the door was shut, thus the foolish ones could not reach. Be it a bedside light or a street light or a lantern or a table lamp or a reading light or desk lamp or floor lamp , without fuel in it, it is useless.

Importance of oil in the lamps is well demonstrated here. Yes the lamp is useful only when sufficient oil is poured into it.. Let us be like the wise virgins who realized the importance of oil, in their lamps to be kept burning continually. How does a person become wise? Let us learn the way since it is mentioned in the above parable that wise virgins could meet the bridegroom and were invited to the wedding banquet. And after they could enter, the door was shut and not opened for the foolish. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the Holy one is understanding“. Well, God leads us till the end. He never leaves us nor forsake us in the middle of this life’s journey. He is ALL SUFFICIENT. Our lamps need to give light CONTINUALLY, as mentioned to the Israelites. Consistency is one of the most characteristics of a believer. In spiritual terms, this moment a person cannot be on a mountain level and the very next moment fall to the ground level.

Our lamps need to filled with oil from above in order to give light in a continuous/ constant/ non stop/ unbroken/ permanent way. David was at great spiritual heights but his lamp could not give light for a season due to a break caused by desires of the flesh. Joseph’s lamp was burning continually though he was put to the tests of lust , prison and distance from near and dear. Are our lamps giving light without breaks/stops?

Light is meant for this dark world. Isaiah prophesied about the birth of Lord Jesus in Isaiah 9:2 “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light , on those living in the land of shadow of death, a light has dawned”

Jesus is the light of the world. The real light, and the light that lasts forever. We as His children need to reflect his light as long as we have breathe. Are we the light to this world or are we allowing the darkness in this world to enter into us, thus putting off the light?  Matthews 5:14 “You are the light of the world. “A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven

Are we hiding the light under a bowl? What does this bowl signify? Some tend to pretend as if they do not know the Lord. Are our job/profession/career/ family/ culture /friendship /prestige not allowing our light to shine? Are they making our light to be put under a bowl? Let us examine ourselves. Nowadays people are denying his name for some worldly benefits. “For God who said “Let light shine out of darkness” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ “,  2Corinthians 4:6;  “”Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens and those who lead many to the righteousness like the stars for ever and ever”, Daniel 12:3.

Yes if we resist the devil and shine out of the darkness, we will all inherit the eternal home where the Lamb is its lamp “The city does not need the sun or moon to shine on it for the glory of the God gives it light and the lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its LIGHT and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.”, Revelation 21:24. “There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light and they will reign forever and ever” Revelation 22:5.

We are indeed privileged to be invited to the greatest beautiful city ,which words cannot describe and we will be with the Lord forever and ever

“The light of the righteous shines brightly but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out”, Proverbs 13:9.  May the brilliance of the light from heaven, which flashed around Paul and transformed him from a persecutor to a preacher, also flash on us to transform us to meet the Lord in the air. by Sarah Susan
