John 3:19-20, “19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed”
As we have already tackled that Jesus did not come to condemn the world, but as the Light He revealed His righteousness to show that the world (men) are already condemned without believing in Him. In these two verses above, He states clearly why men will not believe (come to the light); they love darkness (sin).
At this point would we conclude that there are wonderful people in the world if the gospel was shared with them would gladly receive it because they love the truth (light)? There have been debates that those in the most primitive places trying to live a godly life would be more open to receive the gospel. This has been proven not to be the case and Jesus tells us why, “… men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil”. The Jews rejected the Messiah they were waiting for; they loved their self- righteousness than they did God, the sin of unbelief.
The apostle Paul passed by Athens where he found some very religious people, Acts 17:22-23, he says, “22…Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; 23 for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you:” Paul tried to introduce them to the One they worshiped without knowing. He preached Jesus that they would understand the true God, true worship, repentance, life in Christ, resurrection etc., vs 32 says “And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked…” it’s interesting that out of those who were religious, only a number received the message of the gospel.
Why is it therefore hard for men to come to the light? Because sinners love their sin and they do not want anything exposing the sin in their hearts. That is the case Paul makes in Romans 1:18-3:20 why the wrath (anger) of God is revealed because men love darkness. Men suppress the truth in unrighteousness (wickedness). This brings to reality that “we are not sinners because we sin, but rather we sin because we are sinners”. That is our nature, it started with Adam (original sin) and it has impacted us all and our only hope is the last Adam.
Vs. “20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed”. Because by nature men hate God, their hearts are hardened hating everything it should desire. Ephesians 2:1-3 in addressing those who in the past used to hate the light says, “1 Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.”(NLT).
This is to say that those who love darkness are dead, their hard hearts are dead and cannot respond to the light because by nature it hates it and cannot be drawn to it. Not even amounts of trials can make it look like men are making progress. Paul already disqualifies that notion, Romans 3:9-18, “9…For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” 13 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” 14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 in their paths are ruin and misery,17 and the way of peace they have not known.”18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” (ESV)
Man can try to cage evil however he cannot eradicate it. We can put men in prison, but that does not change their hearts. They may just be evil men caged but not changed. The hard sin loving heart can only be surgically removed and replaced with a new heart that brings new birth. This is God’s job, He says, “26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules”, Ezekiel 36:26-27. New heart will have new desires; it will love the light and hate darkness. It will love what it once hated and hate what it once loved. This is a supernatural work, this is an inside job. Blessings Ev
