Exodus 29:19-20, “Take the other ram, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on its head. Slaughter it, take some of its blood and put it on the lobes of the right ears of Aaron and his sons, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet…”
Applying the blood to the ear, was about hearing only God’s Word, while applying it to the thumb was about rightly serving God and God’s people. Lastly, but equally important is the application of the blood covering to the “big toes of their right feet,” so that the sanctified walk of the priests would be examples to the people. What priest walked here on earth in perfect righteousness?
Hebrews tells us, “Such a high priest [Jesus] meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens (7:26). A priest offers sacrifice on behalf of the people, and Jesus offered His very life to be the sacrifice as well. The many former OT priests died, ‘But this man [Jesus] because He continues ever, has an unchangeable priesthood… “Who needs not daily, as those high priests to offer sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself (5:10; 7:24,27).” Jesus didn’t only offer the sacrifice as the priest, He was the sacrifice once and for all which is why he said, “It is finished on the cross.”
Jesus walked in righteousness as a priest proclaiming that He Himself came for this very purpose as He said, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.” If we are to walk in righteousness the blood of Christ needs to be applied to our big toe and the rest of our foot because God tells us, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” If we truly walk in righteousness our feet will be carrying us to preach the good news.” “But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference…” The Law and the prophets walked in righteousness to bring spoken testimony and point to Christ. Only faith in Christ can bring about God’s righteousness. The Law doesn’t make us righteous, it doesn’t help us, and rather it leaves us helpless with the need to throw ourselves at the feet of the Savior. After now being born again by the Holy Spirit, and realizing that “…you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God…”, 1Peter 2:9, we need to present our lives as living sacrifices to reach the lost for Christ. The lost need desperately to have the blood of the Savior applied to their sins to be redeemed from the curse of the Law of sin and death. God has left that mission to you and me to do. “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us”, 2Corinthians 5:20.” “To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory”, Colossians 1:27.
Application: Do you have the blood of Christ applied to your toe, and are your feet mobilized to go seek and save the lost. Are your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15)? If you want to be used by God then move those feet that God gave you for Him and His glory. “Satan prefers 1,000,000 choir members or pew-warmers to one Christian who is prepared to obey the command to preach the Gospel (Ray Comfort)” Many believers have their feet stuck it seems when its time for obeying our mission to seek and save the lost because of all the excuses and a lack of zeal and urgency. To bring common ground many have said “he puts his pants on one leg at a time. However there is one group, they put their pants on two legs at a time”. Firefighters live with a sense of urgency, because they must respond to the alarm that they must GO or people will die. How much more truthful can that reality be for the Christians. You’re either going or staying, but only is done in obedience and you know which that is. Now GO!
