If We Only Knew, Part 3of4, Evans Olang

1Samuel 25:2-35, “32 Then David said to Abigail: “Blessed is the LORD God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! 33 And blessed is your advice and blessed are you, because you have kept me this day from coming to bloodshed and from avenging myself with my own hand”

An encouraged person is alive person. Who wants to be around a discouraged person who always talks about nothing but failures and problems? I come across such people, always discouraged. You encourage them today, they will be discouraged tomorrow. When they call you, they wear you down with their discouragements. At times I’m not sure if their calling is to get encouragement or to find someone to join their pity party.

I for one do well with encouragements and husbands need encouragements from their wives. Behind that macho presentation there is a vulnerability shelled with macho appearance looking for an encouragement to touch it. I think that some wives feel like their encouragements will not be significant, or he doesn’t need one or he appears strong enough to make it without encouragements. A wife who is the number one supporter of her husband has something inside of her that can touch her husband in a way that no one else can. Wives give their husbands a reason to move forward by believing in them and verbalizing it. Men have feelings too that need a touch from a loving wife. You’ve heard some wives tell their husbands how useless they are and how they will never amount to anything, this has killed them even more. They did not look forward to going home and even the need to try was shattered by a judgment already passed with no room for improvement and development. An encouragement will make him try harder and will make him a better husband.

What was Abigail’s encouragement to David, 28 … … the LORD will certainly make for my lord an enduring house, …, and evil is not found in you throughout your days. 29 Yet a man has risen to pursue you and seek your life, but the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living with the LORD your God; …. 30 And it shall come to pass, when the LORD has done for my lord according to all the good that He has spoken concerning you, and has appointed you ruler over Israel.” Was David not a mighty warrior? Yes he was and just like any other man, his feelings and vulnerability was shelled by macho appearance needing an encouragement to pierce through the macho appearance to touch the inner being. An encouragement to melt. Maybe he was considered a warrior with no feelings just putting a show and doing the work. Even pastors, evangelists, elders, deacons, teachers, preachers, bosses, ceo’s who have excelled in their offices need encouragements. What Abigail was somehow telling David was, “you don’t need to do any shady business to make it to the top, follow God’s ways and he will make ways for you for it’s not by might nor by power but by His spirit says the Lord”. Even if you’ve been offended and should seek revenge, calm yourself down and see how much damage you will do to your reputation, your destiny. Don’t do anything you will regret.

It may be hard for a husband to admit he needs encouragement, I pray the wives will learn the signals that calls for encouragements. If only wives knew how much their husbands crave for encouragements, they would seek ways to less criticize them and encourage them more. An encouragement will keep him alive and hopeful.
