1Samuel 25:2-35, 32 Then David said to Abigail: “Blessed is the LORD God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! 33 And blessed is your advice and blessed are you, because you have kept me this day from coming to bloodshed and from avenging myself with my own hand”
Going back to the text, I see two different people, Abigail beautiful and of good understanding and Nabal a fool, the meaning of his name. Abigail has regards for God, Nabal has no regards for God. Maybe in his heart he said there was no God the reason the bible says, “A fool has said in his heart there is no God” (paraphrased). In all this we still see a woman committed to protecting even the one who doesn’t deserve to be protected letting God have His way in her life. She had opportunities to destroy her husband yet not lifting a finger. There is no indication she was in abusive relationship, all I can see is a greedy husband who had no regard for other people and he was about to be spared because of her believing wife. 1Corinthians 7:13, “… if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife,… (NIV)
Vs. “23 Now when Abigail saw David, she dismounted quickly from the donkey, fell on her face before David, and bowed down to the ground. 24 So she fell at his feet and said: “On me, my lord, on me let this iniquity be! And please let your maidservant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your maidservant.” Why would Abigail take the fault for what her husband did? Perhaps she saw that in marriage you are a unit in good and in bad times. If one is failing, that means the other partner is also affected. Couples can withdraw when the going gets tough, some have only stuck together in good times. Bad times really separated them hence turning around looking for faults and blaming them on each other. The enemy fights unity in marriages, if he can set the couple to fight each other, there will be no room to fight him. He is looking for ways to display dirty laundry couples will use against each other. Lack of unity has destroyed many marriages, everything is about me and mine where is ours? They say another killer in marriage is finances, my money and your money there is no our money, no unity even in finances. Remember Nabal saying my bread and my water and my meat , my shearers. Abigail takes fault to save their (our) family. If we only knew the enemy was after our unity, we would fight him who tries to build a wedge between couples.
Abigail brings food to David and his men and the first thing she does, repents seeking that all the evil to be on her. Can you see this woman putting her life on the line for her husband? I’m not sure of how many husbands would do the same for their wives and vice versa. Christ was willing to put His life on the line for the ones He loved. He said I love you, then demonstrated it by drying on the cross. If only the sinner knew and understood the sacrifice Christ had to make because of His love, a sinner would repent of his sins and trust in Christ alone with his life. His desire would be to live a life pleasing to the one who first loved him. Christ became the role model for husbands, Ephesians 5:25, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;”. To put it in another way, husbands demonstrate your love by putting your lives on the line for your wives. She should not lose her number 2 place in his life after God (He is FIRST). To continue…blessings Ev
