Psalm 1:1-6, “… He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings fruit in it’s season…”
I believe the opening chapter in the book of Psalm down to a few verses is one of the guidelines to being blessed of God. God has no shortcuts for His people to get blessed despite the many teachings we hear especially with televangelists. I believe God would want us to move from expecting miracles to being blessed. Being blessed in my judgment is a working progress. Let’s see what Psalm 1 teaches us how to be blessed.
Vs. 1, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful”. It’s interesting to note that the bible already calls you blessed when you are set apart from the world. This verse puzzled me for a very long time as I was not sure whether it meant I should not walk with the unbelievers. The verse does not mean we cannot walk with the unbelievers, it says we cannot go by their counsel (wisdom), thinking or their ways. To grow, your counsel and their counsel has to be replaced by His. The primary reason we should hang out with the unbelievers is to witness to them.
To be blessed is vs. 2, “to delight in the law of the Lord, and on His law, meditate day and night”. Though we know the law is to tell what sin is, God uses it also to keep and safe and sound but you have to delight in it. Here the law is more than rules but the word of God.
Vs. 3, “ He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper” Every tree is planted for a reason. Trees don’t just grow for nothing and no one also plants trees for nothing. Some plant trees for beauty, shade, timber, fruits. God does plant His trees for fruit. He wants to see us grow. As a tree, we are planted by the river of the living water to bring forth fruit. As branch in John 15 we abide in Him that we may bear fruit. You can see that to be blessed you have to be connected to the right source. So what kind of fruit is the bible talking about, Galatians 5:22-23, “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law”. I don’t see how one can bear this fruit real quick. It takes time and growth. Do you realize the bible does not say produce fruit or grow fruit? It’s because if we are planted by the river and are abiding, the fruit will come. Our leaves will not dry and whatever we do, we will prosper.
God has planted us by His rivers and as He living water, He continuously flows in us. The river is not stagnant water but moving water always bringing in the fresh water. When the word of God dwells in our hearts daily and we pray and meditate on His word daily, we get continuous supply for our day to day. I believe that when we are planted by the His river, we get our nourishment every day. We don’t need to struggle to stay good or be fruitful because it will happen without any struggle. Many will see the change in us and would desire to know where we are planted. Remember that everyone is planted by a certain river, the question is, which one? Christ gave the Samaritan woman the living water and she went back to be a witness in Samaria. She did not struggle to do it as she was now planted by the river of life. The more I see the fruit of the Spirit in my life, the more I consider myself blessed. It takes time because of the growth process but it’s worth it. Blessings Ev
