Jude 1:3–4, “3 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ “
When one looks throughout the Scriptures and even in our world today, there is constant fighting, contending for land, possessions, property, status, etc…. Jude tells us that we need to CONTEND EARNESTLY for the faith. To do something earnestly is to be intense and serious in one’s mentality regarding the matter at hand. Is there any matter greater than the Gospel? Proverbs 28:1 reminds us, “…the righteous are as bold as a lion.” The lion is known for its boldness, for its roar, for its presence. Should not the Christian be bold in his or her witness in the midst of false teachers? In part 2 we examined the difference between someone being in error and someone being classified as a heretic.
Carlton Pearson, is a well know preacher, yet denies the existence of Hell. TD Jakes does not believe in the trinity. We must be ever so careful as to those that are preaching what they think is the Gospel, but is really not. Remember all it takes is a teaspoon of rat poisoning to kill you. Paul said it like this, “4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump” (1Cor. 5:4-6)?
Jude says of those bringing in the poisonous doctrine and sinful practices, “For certain men have crept in unnoticed.” This is a scary thing when the church cannot notice the wolves in sheep clothing come to devour the sheep. We are to contend, speak for the Gospel and we have the mandate to speak against the deceptive messages that some have to preached which are false gospels. Does this mean that we are to argue with people? Paul wrote to Timothy, “23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. 24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will (2 Timothy 2:23-25). “You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine, Titus 2:1,” as you “Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers (2Timothy 4:16).” This is why we are instructed to, 2Timothy 4:2-3, “2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
Saints, we must be diligent to preach the Word in and out of season. When you share the gospel with others, be diligent to make sure that the gospel that you hear, and share with others is truly the Gospel according to Jesus Christ, for no others “gospel” can transform a life to become like the person of Jesus Christ. Take time to go through the Gospel this week and read the very words of Jesus Christ and examine how you might apply what God reveals to you through them in your life.
