2Peter 2:1-2, “1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
Anyone that has watched a magician or an illusionist knows that the hand can appear to be quicker than the eye. Many illusionists cause one to look in one direction while the illusionist does something in another direction. Illusionist show things that are false hiding what things are true. Peter writes that false teachers are among you and they shall bring damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them and bring them and bring upon themselves swift destruction. Peter tells us:
There are teachers among you now, at this time that are false. These false teachers may be heard on the radio, seen and heard on television, they have authored books, and of course some preach in churches and or stadiums. Perhaps you listen to some of these false teachers. One must realize that just because a preacher or teacher is popular that does not automatically connote that the preacher is biblical. Hitler was popular, but certainly not a man of integrity, and certainly did not preach truth, using Evolution to substantiate his racial superiority jargon. If a preacher can get a large following, this too does not equate a biblical source in the preacher. Any music celebrity can also gain a large following, can also pack a stadium or concert hall full of people that will scream their name, buy their products, and wear their apparel. The church is not popularity contest. Jesus choose twelve, and one was lost, he did not have a large following in this light, but those that followed him learning to be fishers of men.
How can one recognize a false teacher? Peter answers this question by saying one can recognize a false teacher by “realizing the damnable heresies, even denying the Lord bought them and bring upon themselves swift destruction”. Do the preachers you listen to preach damnable heresies. Here are some popular heresies among the professing Christian preachers today:
- There is another way to heaven other than Jesus
- People are basically good (moral) in their heart
- God would never send anyone to Hell
- My God would never create Hell
- The trinity does not exist
- One can be a “good” Muslim, Mormon, Buddhist, Hindu, etc… and still make it to heaven
Many deny this payment that Christ paid on the cross, choosing to put faith in ones “good works” rather than on the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Peter said that swift destruction would come upon them. Remember that judgment delayed (in our estimation) is not judgment denied. Please, be very careful about the preachers and teachers that you are listening to whether via TV, radio, reading a book or magazine, etc…. Evans and I would be open for you all to examine the messages that we share to be sure that we are staying biblically accurate. We can accidentally be in error. Let 1Timothy 3:16 and 2Timothy 2:15 be your guide as you beware of false teachers.
Until the nets are filled…Blessings, Pastor Phil <><
