While Men Slept, Part 2of3: The Power To Pray, Evans Olang

Posted on Updated on

Matthew 13:24-25, “24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way.”

In Part 1 I mentioned that there are three spheres that affect our prayer lives 1. THE REASONS TO PRAY, 2. THE POWER TO PRAY, and 3.THE HOW TO PRAY. We shared on The Reasons To Pray. Let’s look at another area The Power To pray.

It’s one thing to pray, it’s another thing to pray with power. Ephesians 3:20, reads, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” God does things according to His power that works within us. The will and the desire comes from Him, Philippians 2:13, “for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” It is the power that overcomes 1John 5:4, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith”

Think of 2Corinthians 4:7 that reads,” But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (NIV). God could have stored His treasure in golden vessels but He chose not to. He placed treasure in vessels of clay that breaks and can be replaced. He did because in these vessels are His power seen and there He glorifies Himself. And this is to show that the power is not of us but His. Jesus glorified His Father more than anyone else. I believe He could only do it best here on earth through submission to God the Father and displaying it to the whole world. One of the greatest things we observe about Christ is His prayer life, totally depending on the Holy Spirit power to endure. The gospel according to Luke makes it more clear than any of the other gospels.

Not only does Christ demonstrate the power to pray, we see the same with the disciples and some of the men God has used down through the ages. They would all testify that it was according to the power of God working in them that they could pray with such power and expect God to move. Read some of their quotes “You can do more than pray after you’ve prayed, but you cannot do more than pray until you have prayed”, John Bunyan. ; “Prayer is the greatest of all forces, because it honors God and brings him into active aid”, E.M. Bounds; “Only turning God’s house into a house of fervent prayer will reverse the power of evil so evident in the world today”, Jim Cymbala. “He who knows how to overcome with God in prayer has heaven and earth at his disposal”, C. S. Spurgeon. “God uses prayer to educate His people and to produce holiness of character in them”, Harold Lindsell; “No man – I don’t care how colossal his intellect – No man is greater than his prayer life.“, Leonard Ravenhill; “God does nothing except in response to believing prayer.” John Wesley (Famous evangelist who spent 2 hours daily in prayer), “No preacher can reap on the pulpit what he has not plowed in the closet”, C. S. Spurgeon

And this quote also continues to bless my heart because it’s the heart of prayers by great missionary to China Hudson Taylor, who said, “The prayer power has never been tried to its full capacity. If we want to see Divine power wrought in the place of weakness, failure, and disappointment, let us answer God’s standing challenge, Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know”, Jeremiah 33:3

All these is possible when the Holy Spirit resides within us and empowers us to pray as He prays for us and through us too. Romans 8:26-27, “26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God”. Therefore prayer power is not about ABILITY, it’s about AVAILABILITY. God will take care of the ability according to His power that works within us if we are available. Blessings, Ev
