Whose Report Will You Believe? Pastor Phil Sessa

Number 13:1-2, “The LORD said to Moses, “Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders.”

People are always giving different reports on the same issue. Many scientists at one time reported that the earth was flat, but a minority of people believed it to be round, as did the Bible state the same (Isaiah 40:22) At one time the scientific majority said the earth sat on a large animal, while the Bible had stated the earth floats free in space (Job 26:7). And my favorite, many say you should never discuss religion or politics at a table, 2% of Christians disobey the majority’s word then.

The Lord brought His plan to Moses to send out spies into the land (v.1) by the commandment of the Lord (V.3) were chosen one man from each tribe in Israel. Verses 4-16 describe the names of the rulers from each tribe. Verse 6 speaks of Caleb who was from the same tribe as Jesus (Judah) and verse 16 is when Moses calls Joshua. These names are obviously the main characters in the account. Moses lays out the blueprints of the assignment. They were to bring back a report of the following: #1. The People: Strong or weak, few or many. #2. Land: Good or bad, fat or lean, wood or not, fertile soil or poor soil?. #3 Towns: Unwalled or fortified. #4 Tangible Evidence (extra credit): Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.) This was going over and above their assignment.

Two reports returned, one from the majority, and one from the minority. The Majority report stated the following in their report: Land: Flowing with milk and honey; People: Strong. They focused on the fact of the people of Anak that were allegedly giants (v.33). It’s probably more important to say gigantic as a description. Writings have been found from the Egyptians written on papyrus (13 Cent. BC) describing fierce warriors in Canaan 7-9 feet tall; Towns: Walled and very great; Fruit: They brought a single cluster of grapes, carried on a pole by to men, along with some pomegranates and figs.

Verse 32 states “And they brought an evil report” to the children of Israel. Those were the cold, hard facts! Beautiful land – ugly giants; what were they to do?

The Minority reported the following in their report: Well, one of the spies named Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, and answered Moses’ question with this statement; “We should go up at once and possess it for we are well able to overcome it.” Now that’s an extremely different report, as different as liberals and republicans, night and day, east and west. The Israelite’s were faced with an important choice; who’s report were they going to believe? The minority, positive report, full of faith, adventure, and proactively, said, “We should go up at once and take possession for we are well able to overcome it” or the majority, evil, doubtful, already defeated, and may I say Satanic report saying “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are“. Unfortunately, they believed the negative report and didn’t enter the Promised Land for another forty years. Were Joshua and Caleb being presumptuous in their faith? Perhaps these two knew that “giants” were no problem for a Giant God! What is the final verdict? Deuteronomy. 1:35-38 shows how out of the twelve spies only Joshua and Caleb entered the Promised Land. The ten were called by Moses rebellious, unfaithful, grumblers, causing the people to lose heart. None of the men of that evil generation Moses, said, would enter into the Promise Land, except Joshua and Caleb. Funny,! what were the names of the other spies? I can’t remember.

Application: God has placed a dream, passion, destiny or promise in your heart, you must be willing to kill some giants of doubt, fear and unbelief, to attain it! We must go forward unafraid and not be so easily dissuaded from the aspirations God has placed in our hearts. If God has spoken to us about a promise he wants to bring to pass in our lives – lets believe him and be ready to fight some giants. Hang onto God’s promises and refuse to back down! Go forward, praying for courage and enter that Promised Land – it’s worth the fight! Blessings Pastor Phil
