Mark 9:14-29,”…But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us”
A father had faith for his child to be healed the moment he brought him to Jesus. Once His disciples could not do anything for his son and looking at the condition of his son and how worse it was getting. Then looking at how the spirits were terrorizing his boy even in the presence of Jesus, his faith from his request to Jesus suggest that he had very little hope, he says “But if You can do anything have compassion on us and help us“. The word “IF” sounded like a doubt in Jesus’ ability to heal. If you doubt someone’s ability, then how will you have faith in them? “WHEN” is the word of assurance, that is the word of faith this father needed. He needed help for his son, however, he also needed help to believe that it could be done. My prayer is that we will take our faith off “IF” and move it to “WHEN” for that is where the Lord would have us put our faith. He can do it period, it’s just a matter of WHEN. The bible says that, “He makes all things beautiful in His time”
Mark 9:23, “Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes”. The Lord’s power mixed with the gift of faith He gives us produces victory. I don’t know how people can receive something if they don’t believe that the one they are coming to has the capability to do it. Here the Lord is telling him that all he has to do is believe, not analyze, try and see what is around that can be used to make it happen. All things are possible to him that believes. To confirm this, many times when Jesus reached out to people, what did He say? “Your faith has made thee whole” It’s our faith in God that makes all things possible. Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen”, we all hope for something from the Lord that hasn’t been revealed or seen yet. In the midst of it, we are trusting and believing that with time it will come. What people hope for, they look forward to receiving as opposed to someone who is not sure. However big or small the thing you hope for, just remember that the size does not intimidate Jesus for there is nothing too difficult for Him. Jesus may ask you to push a huge rock but that does not mean He expects you to move it. You push, He does the moving, you enjoy the victory and He gets all the glory (credit).
Mark 9:24, “Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief” , NIV translation reads the last portion this way “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief”, this line sounds confusing for one instant he says he believes and then says help my unbelief. He believed the healing could happen at the same time he was not so sure to what extent. He also believed it could happen but he was not as calm as Jesus and so his prayer was that Jesus would boost his faith to the level of His, to see things the way Jesus did. I have the faith in God to know that He can, now I need my faith to be elevated to a greater level where I can be calm about it, no be intimidated by situation any more for I have faith that negates the facts. If you have unbelief, ask the Lord to help you overcome it for whatever you requested of Him is already settled, now faith is the vehicle the Lord will use to bring it to pass. Can you see how this father was so open to admit his weak faith and asking for help? his admission and seeking resulted to something greater than what he had before meeting Jesus. Faith established is not just for today’s miracle but even greater things to come.
I can now see why Jesus was not too quick to heal the boy till he established faith in his father. So don’t freak out when what you prayed for is delayed, you could still be in “Faith Class” being prepared for something bigger than the current situation. The current situation is a faith booster, it’s an eye opener. It also teaches you that Jesus cares that is why He is moved by our feelings…. To finish, Blessings, Ev
