Blessings Of Abraham, Evans Olang

Galatians 3:6-9 , “6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” 7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.” 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.”

The blessing of Abraham is many times looked at as material blessings since God had blessed him with wealth, however Paul points out that the blessing of Abraham is in reference to salvation by faith apart from works. Vs. 7,”Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham”

The Judaizers in Galatia were perverting the gospel by adding other elements to a company salvation. Two things they hammered, circumcision and keeping of the law. Circumcision was part of initiating them into Judaism as candidates for salvation and then they had to keep the law to be saved. They considered themselves the children of Abraham and they claimed Abraham accomplished both.

Two instances from history would disqualify this reasoning. 1. Abraham was circumcised 14 years later after he was justified by faith. 2. The law came with Moses 430 years after Abraham was long gone. Here Paul explains in vs. 8, how salvation of Abraham came about, “And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, … ” The Scripture, the Word, Christ Himself preached the gospel to Abraham by giving him a promise and Abraham believed God and that was counted to him for righteousness. This proves that, “the just shall live on the principle of faith alone.”

A classic example of Abraham’s blessing comes from the New Testament, the salvation of Zacchaeus, Luke 19:9-10, “And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” His salvation was justification by faith alone apart from works. God had promised Abraham that those who come through the same door of faith as he did would be considered his sons something Zacchaeus had been declared. Galatians 3:9, “So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.”

“This among others are blessings in Christ, and not temporal, but spiritual ones, even all spiritual blessings; as redemption, reconciliation, peace, pardon, adoption, sanctification, and eternal life, and particularly justification; this is the blessedness more especially intended, which comes not upon the circumcision only, but the uncircumcision also; and they that partake of this are blessed indeed; for they are justified from all sin, are free from condemnation”, John Gill

“Men fast, pray, watch, suffer, they intend to appease the wrath of God and to deserve God’s grace by their exertions. But there is no glory in it for God, because by their exertions these workers pronounce God an unmerciful slave driver, an unfaithful and angry Judge. They despise God, make a liar out of Him, snub Christ and all His benefits; in short they pull God from His throne and perch themselves on it. They enthrone themselves and dethrone God from His throne”

“Without faith God forfeits His glory, wisdom, truth, and mercy in us. The first duty of man is to believe in God and to honor Him with his faith. Faith is truly the height of wisdom, the right kind of righteousness, the only real religion”, Martin Luther

Faith truly honors God. And because faith honors God, God counts faith for righteousness. Blessings Ev
