He Has You Covered, Part 2of3, Evans Olang

Genesis 3:1-21, “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them”

A garment is a type of coat or robe especially used for official purposes. In Genesis after the fall of man, Adam and Eve having had knowledge of their nakedness moved to cover themselves by making for themselves clothing out of leaves. When men fell, 1. Immediately they knew they had failed God, 2. They discovered they were naked and 3. They developed a need to hide. We understand that there are things as human beings we can do on our own and might work but the truth is, it will not last for long. They had leaves covering them not realizing that leaves would soon dry up and fall off. So man tries so hard to cover his nakedness only for it to work but for a season. The bible tells me that there are things that if God does not do, anything someone else will do will be in vain. Psalm 127:1, “Except the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain that build it: Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh in vain”. I would say that this verse means that anything you are going to do if the Lord is not involved in it, however hard you try and do it, it will never work.

Genesis 3:21, “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them”. Here comes the Lord who knows that whatever man will do, will not work unless He steps in. He made garments of skin for Adam and his wife. I paused here for a sec, the Lord did not tell them what to do and how to do it, He stepped in and did it for them. We see the first death of an animal, the first sacrifice. Even in the midst of their failure, God still knew how vulnerable man was without Him therefore He reached the poor material “man” and did something for him. Remember the scripture we just looked at, “Except or unless the Lord does it, man will be doing it in vain”. Whatever the Lord does comes already blessed, He can only bless what His hands are on.

I also wondered why garments and nothing else, let’s look at why the Lord loves garments, In Exodus 28:1-5, God is giving instructions to Moses on what to do for the priests He had appointed (Aaron and his sons). Exodus 28:2-3, “2 Make sacred garments for your brother Aaron, to give him dignity and honor, vs. 3, “Tell all the skilled men to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as a priest”. Can you see that the garments were to give him dignity and honor and then for his consecration. In the olden times, the priests ministered to the Lord and brought messages from the Lord to the people. There were people who were given special tasks to do this kind of service. When Jesus died on the cross, the ones who received Him, He gave them power to become, and now we are priests who minister to the Lord daily. Only God could clothe us again with dignity and honor by sending His Son to the cross to die for the shamed human race and Paul writes in Romans 13:14, “Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ … “, putting on the Lord Jesus gives us dignity and honor and we get consecrated which is to say being set apart for the Master. God had to clothe us with Jesus to remove all our guilt and shame. NOT ONLY DID HE PROVIDE THE GARMENTS, HE ALSO CLOTHED THEM.

The garments were not made of cheap imitated materials, let’s go back to Exodus 28:4-5, “4 These are garments they are to make: a breast piece, an ephod, a robe, a woven tunic, a turban and a sash. 5, “have them use gold, and blue, and purple and scarlet yarn, and the fine linen”. We said God is skillful in making things, everything is done systematically and goes through different stages. Because this was a special project ordained by Him, the skilled men could not make the garments outside His instructions (Except the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain), it was as if God is giving them the architectural plan executed in heaven in readiness for the building down here. The plan, the structure, what kind of materials to be used were budgeted for in heaven by God. He gave the final architectural plan as a sign that He has built it already. Yes it may still look like it’s ink and paper but it’s a done job. He calls those things which are not as though they are. Our garments are skillfully designed in heaven and God is executing that plan here on earth through His Son by the power of the Holy Spirit. Garments reserved for us are not made of cheap materials and they are not just made, they are skillfully designed by the Creator of all. It’s a blessing to know that my garments is CUSTOM MADE and has the label “JESUS”, He is the reason for the garment. Let’s look at different garments in the next session. Blessings Ev
