Genesis 32:26, “And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks. ” But he said, “I will not let you go unless You bless me!”
We serve a God of too much, God of abundance, God of no limitations. If I look at the story of Jacob and Esau, Jacob deceived his brother and took away his birthright. He then deceived his father to take away his brother’s intended blessing. He also deceived his father in-law and made the best for himself, the only one he could not deceive was God. For what he desired, he had to come clean. Who does not want blessings? people bring their children to church to be dedicated and blessed, who does not want a blessed marriage, blessed home, blessed children to mention a few? Who can say that they have enough blessings to want more? Jacob had been blessed with one beautiful wife and one fruitful wife, he had children, possessions, servants, maid servants. He was blessed as you can see but God brought him to a place where he would desire more blessings but not in terms of material blessings. Genesis 32:24, “The Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking day”. Alone in His presence, where the former life did not dictate what God would do in his life. Despite the fact that you have things to make you comfortable, there is more to desire. I don’t know why he wrestled with the Man (God), maybe he wanted to manipulate his way like he always did only to fail. This is a blessing not worth fighting (he was not worthy to fight for it in the first place), it was a blessing worth asking for. Why fight to be blessed when all you can do is ask?
Genesis 32:26, “And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks. ” But he said, “I will not let you go unless You bless me!” I have been blessed over and over again yet I still need more blessings. The fact He has continued to bless me is an indication I will blessed till my time on this earth expires. I will not let Him go unless He blesses me, when He does, I will not let Him go unless He has blessed me some more. Jacob had been called names, he had a history, but this time He desired a true blessing from above. Yes God might have blessed him through other people even in his failures but this time He wanted the best from above. vs. 29, “…And He blessed Him“. All we need is ask for a blessing and all He desires is to give it to us. Are you afraid of asking for a blessing because you failed yesterday, last week or long time ago? Jacob had his past failures but that did not stop him from asking for a blessing. To show that he really needed the blessing, he held on to God till He blessed him. On that day, Jacob’s name, the deceiver, the conman was blessed with a name change from Jacob to Israel. The name change shows a nation of Israel, blessed beyond what he could have imagined or thought. He did not specify the kind of blessings he desired, he let God bless Him with what God had reserved for him. I have blessings put on layaway, has my name on it, no one can take it for Jesus paid it all. I will not leave the counter until that which the Lord had put on layaway has been released to me. Of all the blessings through gifts that we receive from people, there is no greater blessing than the one from the Father. His blessings are not disappointing because He knows what I need.
What are the blessings you desire? I’m going to go with Paul on this one, I desire more spiritual blessing than anything else. Paul says in Ephesian 1:3-14, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. 13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory”. BLESS ME LORD. Blessings Evans
