1Kings 18:20-40, “… and the God who answers by fire, He is God…”
The world is full of many doctrines, some doctrines have erred from the truth resulting into people being deceived. We have been given an awesome opportunity as believers not just to accept anything without first testing and approving. We then we become vessels God can use to reach His people with the truth He has revealed to us. A number of believers have also fallen on the trap of error as they were not well equipped enough to differentiate or discern.
Elijah was the only prophet in Israel. Many of the prophets had been killed because they did not follow Baal. Baal was the most popular god of the Canaanites, he was a god of lust, power and fertility. He was known to be a god that supplied rain for the crops when there was draught. In his time, Elijah called for draught, and the only way to override the call was not too look to Baal but to God. Baal had 450 prophets who faithfully served him and Elijah got so sick of seeing people worship something that had no power. No wonder Paul writes in 2Timothy 3:5, “having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof”, some people like these prophets have a form of godliness and denies the power in the sense that they are faithful about going to church, worshipping, and walking with a form of god but that’s about it, they don’t see the true God as Almighty. In the world, people have a form of godliness but they deny the power, they are doing everything to keep commandments and know about God but deny His power to save and forgive their sins. Elijah was dealing with the same kind of people only that these worshiped a false god.
Elijah was tired of seeing the true God robbed of His glory by false god and his prophets. Elijah therefore took upon himself to prove who the true God was. He said that whoever answers by fire is the true God. One man against 450 prophets, it was time to prove that it’s not by might nor by power but by His Spirit says the Lord. So Elijah challenged the men to meet him on mount Carmel, he advised them to bring two bulls, one for them and one for him. One man was not threatened by the number. Truth is never threatened by the number, it always stands alone. He decided to give them the first chance to prepare their sacrifice. The true people of God are not intimidated by what the false religion has to offer before them. I have seen people from other religions tremble when we challenged their doctrines why? they have no foundation of the truth to build their beliefs on. They have been trained on how to respond to certain questions unless you ask something outside of that. Finally the prophets set their sacrifice on the altar and began to call on their god. The whole day they cried, chanted, cut themselves, meanwhile Elijah was watching and making fun of them. He knew that at one point he will need to call on his God but it will not take hours before He answers him. After they prayed all day and nothing happened, they gave up, their god failed them big time. If I was to pray to a god all day and nothing happens, I would change my stand.
Elijah then took his sacrifice and set it on the altar, he even had water poured all over sacrifice overflowing. Now we know that water and fire don’t work together and my concern is how will a wet sacrifice burn especially when we know that wet wood cannot catch fire? He knew these people might say that he did something that caused the fire, he was not going to let them think he cheated. Vs. 36, “Lord of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are God, and that You have turned their hearts back to you again“. Vs. 38.”Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench”. This kind of prayer reminds me of lost people I will meet. As lost people, they have something they are worshipping that needs to be challenged. I will need to pray the kind of prayer that moves heaven to send fire to consume their wet hearts, confusion and darkness in their lives.
This is God’s work, all I need to do is to represent Him and He will take care of the rest. God is a consuming fire and when He begins to consume, He consumes everything including the things that in natural cannot be consumed by fire. I believe that God has placed us in different positions to be us against the world. How will they know unless they are told, how will they come out unless they are challenged, “for I am not a shamed of the gospel cause it’s the power of God unto salvation” Romans 1:16. The only way we will challenge the unbelievers is by knowing who God is, what He can do and availing ourselves to be used at any given time to bring people to Him. If you look at the story, you will see how the prophets began to worship the true God but still Elijah killed all of them because they were false prophets whose hearts were not truly changed and they were injecting lies in the minds of people. Be God’s instrument He can use you to challenge and bring people to the full knowledge of Him. Blessings Ev
