1Corinthians 3:1-23, vs. “11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ” NIV
We defined foundation and looked at how possible it is to look at men’s foundation rather than God’s foundation. At Corinth, Paul had laid a good foundation “Jesus Christ and Him crucified“, instead of them building on THIS foundation, they started trying to redefine it which moved them from the spiritual growth to become carnal minded. Thank God that Paul came back to correct their understanding and thank God He is correcting the understanding of those who missed it.
Paul laid a foundation, but he was not the foundation. Paul and Apollos were nothing, God was ALL. Without God, their labor was in vain. He says, vs. 11, “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ”. God has already laid His foundation on His Word, the bible. No one can go around and lay another foundation. Many Religions have tried over and over again to lay another foundation instead of building on THIS one laid. I refuse to be called a religious person simply because being born of God is not about religion but RELATIONSHIP. Many religion teach that you have to find your way to God by doing the so called “good works”. Christianity based on the word of God teaches that it’s only by grace through faith are we saved (Ephesians 2:8&9). Grace lays the foundation we could never lay and there can be no other foundation again thereafter. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am THE way and THE truth and THE life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. “THE” tells us that it’s only by Him.
1Corinthians 3:10, “By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert (master) builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.” The main work of a master builder is contribute knowledge rather than labor. If Paul had laid a foundation “Jesus Christ and Him crucified“, he is now giving the knowledge that they will need for building themselves while others rallied around them to help. He also warned them to be careful of how they build on this foundation. How we each build matters, Paul writes, vs. 12-15, “12 If any man builds on THIS foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work. 14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. 15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames”. These verses challenge me because I understand that to build on THIS foundation, it’s not about happiness as many teach, it’s about something bigger than that, Romans 14:17-18 tells “17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men.”
You can see that happiness is not a material towards building an everlasting building; righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit are THE KEY materials. Happiness comes and goes. The rest of good things are benefits for serving. So let us build on THIS foundation with the KEYS that will survive the fire rather than benefits that will not. The KEY materials are the pillars that hold the building. So who is our sure foundation “Jesus Christ and Him Crucified“, therefore let’s be careful that we do not blindly exalt one who lays a foundation. Let us also be careful that the master builder gives us the right knowledge for building. Let us careful about how we build. Blessings Ev
