Developing The Leader Within, Evans Olang

Genesis 41:33, “Now therefore, let Pharaoh select a discerning wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt”…And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in who is the Spirit of God?”…And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt”

One man was asked how he makes elephant sculptures off a tree trunk, his response, “I take the tree trunk, chop off out of it what does not look like an elephant and what I will be left with will be an elephant. Thereafter I refine that elephant to bring to a completion what I had in mind when I thought of making it”. I have read somewhere that “leaders are not born but are made”. One of our mission statement at church is to raise leaders. Leaders are few because we have so many followers. In as much as so many people don’t feel they are leaders or have the qualities of leadership in them, what they need is to have everything chopped off from them that does not make them look like a leader and what they will be left with is what they need to be.

I believe that all of us have qualities of leadership. It may not be for a big corporation or group but a leader just over a person. What will take for that to happen is first determining who you are, where you are, where you want to go. Getting into conditions that will boost you to your destination. To bring a mental picture, look at an egg, if a chicken is expected out of that egg, then number one: it has to be put under a certain temperature which would lead to incubation and when it’s time is due, a chick will fight it’s way out of the shell. Remember that it had to be given the right conditions to develop from being an egg to being a chick. As long as it’s just a yolk, nothing will happen but when it matures into a chick, the shell is no longer it’s dwelling place. This mental picture shows we have the qualities of being leaders whether we know it or not, all that is needed is to be in a right incubator. It’s okay to be an egg but when you know that you have the ability to be more than an egg, you will not be comfortable being one. You will desire to fight your way through. Often times a word that lingers within our hearts and mind is “I CAN’T”, that’s good because you just passed the test and now you can be made one. Just because you can’t do it doesn’t mean it can’t be done. You have to believe in yourself, the people who believe in you and the Almighty God who will make it happen.

Joseph was a leader developed, for a while he was in an incubator of life being developed to be a leader. When he was but a young man, he was to me like an egg, comfortable being one but when he dreamt twice, the dreams triggered and awakened something inside of him reminding him he wasn’t all the Father wanted him to be. From making the mistake of bragging about how his household will bow before him, to being sold into Egypt, to being in Potiphar’s house, to being in jail to finally rising to power, I can see every part of his leadership being developed. Joseph being developed to be a leader recognized the leadership of someone else above him and he yielded to that leadership, he was first under the leadership of Potiphar and then Pharaoh. He was a man in authority and under authority, through his struggle in life, God developed the humility in him, a quality of a leader.

A servant’s heart is a required quality, this does not just come, it’s developed through a pattern of life. Mark 9:35, “And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all”. Being a leader is not about bossing people around, it is leading by example, this has to be developed. Jesus was not a bossy leader but one that led by example. Doing what many leaders of today would not do, being a servant of all. Joseph learnt servant hood through serving his brothers, Portiphar, the people in prison, the people of Egypt and his own. Wisdom was one of his leadership qualities, again we can see how foolish he was in the beginning. In due time, what was inside of him was developed to mature up. His interpretation of the dream to giving the advise on what was to be done was a God given developed quality the Egyptians needed. I wish I had time I would have talked more on Joseph’s leadership qualities.

You can see that it took time to develop his leadership skills however he was ready for it, he knew of his limitations, he did not limit God. He may have not understood the leadership class he was taking but I believe he appreciated it in life because God put him in an incubator. That egg, the thing that was delicate, that which could not move, that which could not function beyond, and that which was small had to be awakened to push it’s way out to become more than just an egg. Do you see yourself as more than an egg? it’s okay to be an egg but not bound to stay an egg forever. There are so many things in you that have not materialized yet, you need to be in an incubator. Ask God to show you what you could be as a leader and let that trigger something inside of you to desire to be one. Blessings Evans
