Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God to salvation to every one that believes; …”
I heard a joke on a radio program where the announcer said, “there is a recall on the sinners prayers”. Last time I checked, a “recall” was not a good thing. From the announcer, “the sinner’s prayer” not in the bible has not properly done the job it was meant to do by its inventors (not God). To recall something is an indication that what was released to be used is broken and is not functioning the way it was meant to function by its makers. It has been abused and misused to lead many people to have a false sense of assurance of salvation just because they said the sinner’s prayer. If you look at the lives of such, it is hard to see a change, fruits that accompany salvation (do not want the word, fellowship, pray. They are doing pretty much the same things they should have been saved from etc. then you wonder, did the power of God through the gospel plow their hearts leaving them helpless and defenseless at the cross that God would save them? It is very easy to get a decision for Christ, I can lead so many to make that decision, however, for true conversion, to see people soundly saved, we need to remember “salvation is of the Lord”.
In the text above, Paul says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation”. Paul gives the reason why he is not ashamed of the gospel of Christ. It is the power of God, the great and admirable mystery which has been hidden with God from before the foundation of the world. The gospel, through the agency of the Holy Spirit of God, does what no amount of mere human reasoning or argumentation can do. The gospel compels men to face the reality of their own sin and guilt, the inevitability of divine judgment, and the need for a perfect substitute to make atonement for sin if man is to survive at all. The gospel is the dynamite which blasts away self-righteousness, self-complacency, self-delusion, and sinful self-reliance. Nothing else can do, for nothing else is in itself the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes. So it is not the sinner’s prayer that saves, it is the power of God through the gospel that saves because Jonah 2:9, “…salvation is of the Lord”. John 6:44, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him” And the power of God only draws and saves a heart that has been plowed and prepared by His law, Galatians 3:24, “Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith”, why? For “the law of the Lord is perfect converting the soul”, Psalms 19:7,
When I understand that salvation is of the Lord, my job is not to convert people, my job is to be true and faithful witness (preach sin, judgment, righteousness, repentacem faith in God’s love demonstrated on the cross). The Lord does the drawing and the saving the reason we should not be ashamed of the gospel of Christ.
Let me use this analogy, “God may ask you to push a rock, that does not mean He expects you to move it”, You and I do the pushing (witnessing to the lost), He does the moving (drawing and saving). When the rock moves, He gets all the credit. That is His power to get the job done. When I witness and someone receives the gospel or rejects it, it is still a win win deal, God is at work. A seed has been planted and at that point my prayer is that God would use the words He placed in my heart to share with the lost and grant them repentance that would lead to salvation. God’s Word will not return void. Paul was not ashamed because he knew the power of the gospel was in God and so should we. Lord help us to be bold and faithfully preach the truth, blessings Ev
