Asleep On Delilah’s Lap, Evans Olang

Judges 16:19, “Then she lulled him to sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him”

The enemy has a mission to put believers to sleep and I believe he has been successful in so many levels. The lost are asleep in the dark (sin), believers are asleep in the light. Many believers in the church have been lulled to sleep while the enemy is cutting off their seven locks symbolizing strength, leaving believers with no strength to fight back. He knows he cannot knock you out by a blow, so he tries to find ways to put you to sleep. He knows in your sleep you will yield your strength to him, leaving you dormant and inactive.

If you know the story of Samson, God bestowed strength of many men in him. While some men had armies for battle, Samson was a one-man army. The good and bad things he did would define his destiny. His final down fall came about when he loved a woman by the name of Delilah, a Philistine, and the enemy he constantly battled. The Philistines learning of his affection for this woman said to her vs. 5, “…“Entice him, and find out where his great strength lies, and by what means we may overpower him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and every one of us will give you eleven hundred pieces of silver.” While he loved her, she did not love him back. Likewise, there are people who are in the light beginning to love the world, be aware the world does not love you back. It has been paid to entice and destroy your life. It will not begin in a noticeable way, it will be subtle. Another way believer’s sleep on Delilah’s lap is by making them too busy with other things that take away their priorities, even with good things. Too many programs have crept in to make men asleep on Delilah’s lap in the church. Delilah began to toy with Samson’s mind and emotions, preying on things he was vulnerable to. If she discovered where his strength lied, she could put him to sleep and detach his strength from him. Samson played along with her for a while but we know the enemy does not give up easily unless you give up and give in.

Upon sharing with her where his strength lied, vs. “19 …she lulled him to sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him”. The tragedy of a believer is to lay his head on the lap of the Delilahs of this world and fall asleep. A person in a deep sleep does not know the time, what is happening, could be slain and not fight back. The enemy has shaved off your locks of Prayers, reading of the word, reaching the lost, strength to overcome sin, hunger for righteousness etc. You now have no strength. Samson did not even know that his strength was gone until he tried to go after the enemy as he had done always. Jesus told a parable Matthew 13:24-25 saying: “24 The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way”. It is when men are asleep that the enemy takes full control, planting tares. Jesus told His disciples Mark 14:38, “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. …”. Those who are awake cannot be easily destroyed unless they have fallen asleep. Jesus coming back from praying found His disciples fast asleep during the crucial hour of prayer in the garden of Gethsemane instead of watching and praying to evade becoming vulnerable to the enemy’s prey.

You and I need to check to see if we have fallen asleep or are falling asleep on Delilah’s lap. We need to check and see if Delilah has had our locks of strength shaved off. We cannot lose our effectiveness because we are enticed by the enemy. We need to stand strong, we need to wake up before it is too late. Those who have their locks shaved off, fight and grow your hair back, 1Thessalonians 5:6, “Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober”, 1Peter 1:13, “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober”, 1Peter 5:8, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour”. We need to be sober, we need to discern and know what the enemy is planning on doing, we need to watch and pray. Blessings Ev
