Romans 1:1-31, “16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”
I draw our attention back to Vs. 18, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness”. The “for” introduces an argument which shows that Christ’s gospel is the world’s only hope. Not only by the declarations of the Holy Scriptures, and His judgments, but by nature’s teachings, and by the human conscious. God has given all me conscious which means “with knowledge”. Our day, men suppress the truth in unrighteousness. Where conscious is tampered with, it’s nearly impossible to bring about conviction.
Ungodliness is the fountain of unrighteousness. There is a measure of truth revealed to every man however; men hold the truth in unrighteousness. That is, all their deviations from moral rectitude in heart, speech, and behavior go against God’s standards and creating our own.
George Barna who does many surveys says, “We are witnessing the development and acceptance of a NEW MORAL CODE IN AMERICA,” Mosaics have had little exposure to traditional moral teaching and limited accountability for such behavior. The moral code began to disintegrate when the generation before them – the Baby Busters – pushed the limits that had been challenged by their parents – the Baby Boomers. The result is that without much fanfare or visible leadership, the U.S. has created a moral system based on CONVENIENCE, FEELINGS, AND SELFISHNESS.
The consistent deterioration of the Bible as the source of moral truth has led to a nation where people have become independent judges of right and wrong, basing their choices on feelings and circumstances. It is not likely that America will return to a more traditional moral code until the nation experiences significant pain from its moral choices.” 2Timothy 3.
If God’s word is not the authority over the lives of men, anything goes. Those who suppress the truth in unrighteousness believe God’s word is not INFALLIBLE –a test of proof, AUTHORITATIVE, INSPIRED, SUFFICIENT, it’s not inherent, is not RELIABLE, accepting that there are NO ABSOLUTE TRUTH.
Many refuse to profit by the light they have, and love the darkness rather than the light. All who do not live up to the knowledge they possess, who do worse than they know, hold the truth in unrighteousness. They obstruct the truth, rather than let it have free scope.
This is the reason we need to preach the gospel truth to men who have suppressed the truth in unrighteousness to be awakened. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, “9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God”, Acts 17: 30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”
This bad news for unrighteous highlights the good news of the gospel that in spite of how far man has gone, if he is awakened to his sin and his danger, and he repents and trusts Christ alone for his salvation,God will grant him His righteousness he desperately needs.
