Accursed Things Are Trouble, Part 6of6, by Evans Olang

Joshua 7:10, “So the Lord said to Joshua: “Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face? 11 Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff.”

Temptations in our time are on the loose running wild; God’s standard has not and will never will be lowered. We have to get on with His program and it’s only through Him can we overcome. Romans 13:14, “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” The age of grace is tougher if you think about it. Living for God is much harder than dying for God in my judgement. When you think you’ve mastered Christianity, like Isaiah you are confronted with the Holiness of God that reduces you to nothing. And with one voice you cry to God, “be merciful to me a sinner”

In conclusion, Achan and his family with his belongings were stoned. You may ask, why destroy others who do not appear to have sinned? I think they participated in hiding the accursed things. It started with Achan who brought his family into it and brought about destruction. Not too long ago I was told of a believer who promised to leave his wife if she wouldn’t abort her baby. And because she did not want to be abandoned, she aborted, taking a life. Oh how we would not take accursed things and lead others to be part of what we may do and destroy their lives too. It’s not easy to go down alone but we have to be careful not to destroy other people’s lives especially those whom we love. This puts more fear in me to walk a walk worthy of God.

Achan’s personal sin in taking of the accursed thing brought about the deaths of thirty-six innocent Israelite soldiers and his family. Perhaps the most terrifying thing about sin is that there is no such thing as private sin. All sin affects others; the personal sin of Achan kindled the anger of God against Israel. The personal sin of believers always affects the church at large. Every sin involves society; and since each of us makes up society, every sin affects us.

Vs. 25, “Then Joshua said to Achan, “Why have you brought trouble on us? The Lord will now bring trouble on you.” By one man’s sin, God was made to look bad, Joshua questioned God’s promises, victory was delayed, men’s lives (husbands, sons) were lost in battle, he caused his family to be destroyed, he troubled Israel.

Living righteously consistently is the only acceptable life-style. Let’s glean some truths to help us in this journey, in James 1:12-25 “12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. 18 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of His creatures… 21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, WHICH IS ABLE TO SAVE YOUR SOULS. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 BUT HE WHO LOOKS INTO THE PERFECT LAW OF LIBERTY AND CONTINUES IN IT, AND IS NOT A FORGETFUL HEARER BUT A DOER OF THE WORK, THIS ONE WILL BE BLESSED IN WHAT HE DOES. Accursed things are pleasures for a season. The end result? trouble for a long time. May the Lord help us live faithfully for Him in the midst of trials and temptations. Blessings, Ev
