Joshua 7:10-11, “10 So the Lord said to Joshua: “Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face? 11 Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff”
In the early chapters of the book of Joshua, God encourages Joshua with these words, “As I was with Moses, so shall I be with you”, we see him gain his first huge victory over Jericho. After dreaming of the promised land for 40 years and tasting victory in Jericho, Israel faces a stunning defeat at Ai which brings Joshua to ask questions. We will find out why they were defeated when they should have been gaining victory after victory.
While they were destroying Jericho, a special instructions went out to the people from the Lord, Joshua 6:18, “And you, by all means abstain from the accursed things, lest you become accursed when you take of the accursed things, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it”. Look at the word used “accursed” which is different from “cursed”. The Hebrew word translated “accursed” means to “ban” or “devote”. To make the verse clear, Israel was not to take anything from the city of Jericho, for it had been banned by God; and its destruction was devoted as a monument to the omnipotence of Jehovah, the God of Israel. There were exceptions for a reason to that ban reflected in vs. 19, “…all the silver and gold, and vessels of bronze and iron, are consecrated to the Lord; they shall come into the treasury of the Lord.” To go against the instructions was a serious violation. Greater victory depended on their obedience to God’s instructions. The beginning of chapter 7 tells us of a man by the name of Achan who took accursed things and the anger of the Lord burned against Israel.
In a number of messages I will share, we will see how this story unfolds showing us how when the things of God are violated, it brings about the anger of the Lord. Our prayer always ought to be, “Lord teach us to fear You more”, the bible says in Proverbs 9:10, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”. Where there is no fear of the Lord, people take those things that God has banned and they store it in their lives (tents) while hoping that God will continue to bless and keep them. I believe there are people who are sick right now because they have welcomed things accursed by God in their lives and are unwilling to deal with them. Hatred, rage, unforgiveness, resentments, jealousies, covetousness among other things. Matthew 6:14-15, “14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses”. Living lifestyles accursed by the Lord insisting to keep living that way while hoping and praying the Lord would overlook it and bless you anyway. It could also be something you are into secretly you hope no one finds out. Yes, you are praying and even have people praying for you like crazy but there is no victory in your life for you have harbored accursed things. Not only is the thing affecting you, it is affecting those around you (family, friends, church). A husband may be praying for victory but not gaining it because he has accursed attitude toward his wife. He has refused to honor his wife God’s way, listen to 1Peter 3:7, “Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered”
Paul gives unexhausted list of accursed things that makes people miss God’s kingdom and God’s blessings, Galatians 5:19-21, “19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”, What are you trusting God for? Have you examined whether you have accursed things you are practicing in your life hindering God’s move in your life. Check out Paul’s list and see if any of the things among others I described above are in your life. Blessings Ev
