Songs of Solomon 2:1, “I am the Rose of Sharon, and the Lily of the valleys”
The other day I picked some flowers for my wife, I know she loves flowers and flowers melts her heart. I don’t respond to flowers like she does maybe because I am a man and men respond to other things but you get the point.
Let’s begin by understanding what a flower is. According to the dictionary definition, A flower is a plant that is cultivated and appreciated for its blossoms. The first thing appreciated about it is its beauty, when God created the world, He looked at what He had created and concluded that it was good. You may not feel that you are beautiful both inside and outside, and you may feel you are not significant in this life, you need to be reminded our creator fearfully made you and appreciated His handiwork you are unique and special, there is no one else like you. You have no competition in the entire world, you are an original not a copy or duplicate of something or someone. Psalm 139:14, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made”.
Not only are the flowers beautiful, they have fragrance. I know of certain flowers when the light shines on them especially at night, they produce some nice smelling fragrance and creates a warm atmosphere when the breeze blows through them. What an opportunity to allow the light of Christ to shine through the beautiful flower He has created and allow it to blossom and bring fragrance to your family, friends and those around you. With that in mind, we can say that flowers bring life to the surrounding. Go to any home, see how if there are no flowers around, that house and its surrounding appear dull. Add a few flowers and you bring to life the surrounding. Through that life, flowers also do attract people, birds, insects, how this shows when you begin to be the flower God wants you to be, everyone even the people who don’t like you will be moved and attracted by what they see in you. Let’s not forget that flowers brightens and melts hearts. Ladies love flowers, I say, “the way to the heart of a woman is a flower to make the way” (hope I’m not wrong), it reminds them they are special. Flowers have a way of bringing joy and peace in someone’s life. Why do they usually bring flowers to a sick person in the hospital especially ladies? not only can the medicine be a means of healing, kind thoughts and acts of love have a way of also restoring. To add to what I am talking about, flowers are delicate and tender.
For a flower to maintain all these qualities, it must be given a special attention, cared for. During spring and summer, as you drive around, you see people giving special attention to flowers, natured, watered, planted close to the house, around it decorated to make it look even beautiful, dry leaves around it are removed, fertilizer put around it to help it grow and more so, planted on well prepared soil. The Lord does the same with His children, He desires the best for them and He gives His children a special attention, providing everything that they need to bring to life what I have already shared. The Lord keeps on reaching out and inspecting the flower, spending time with it, putting it in the right spot to ensure enough sun light. You may think that the Lord has deserted you but look deep and you will see that He is taking good care of His flowers why? as Matthew Henry the commentator puts is, “Christ is pleased to compare himself to; and he condescends very much in the comparison. He that is the Son of the Highest, the bright and morning star, calls and owns himself the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys, to express his presence with his people in this world, the easiness of their access to him, and the beauty and sweetness which they find in him, and to teach them to adorn themselves with him, as shepherds and shepherdesses, when they appeared gay, were decked with roses and lilies, garlands and chaplets of flowers. The rose, for beauty and fragrance, is the chief of flowers, and our Saviour prefers the clothing of the lily before that of Solomon in all his glory. I too refer to Him as the Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the valley. He said, “Let us make man in Our image” so here we are just like Him, a flower. He did not make something He couldn’t take care of.
Words from a song I love, “Of all the flowers in the world there is none that can compare, with the rose that God designed it’s beauty is so rare. With His great love, His tender care, He watches till it’s grown. Then He comes to pick the Rose and He takes it for His own” Can you see yourself the way the Lord sees you? Can you say confidently that you are beautiful, have fragrance, you bring life around, you attract, you brighten, you are delicate and you get special attention? Remember, you are a flower in His garden!!!, blessings Ev
