Blessing Our Mothers, Evans Olang

Proverbs 30:11, “11 There is a generation that curses its father, And does not bless its mother..” .

Everyone has a story to tell about their mother and everyone will agree that our mothers have played key roles in our upbringing and we ought to thank and bless them. In our time children regardless of age have despised their parents. How mant sit down to think about how God through their mothers have played huge part in their upbringing. Yes they were not perfect but they gave it all. While I share on mothers, I’m not dismissing the roles of dads in our lives, I just want to concentrate on mothers on this mother’s day. Let’s see some of the blessed mothers in the bible.

Moses’ mother Jochebed hid him when there was a decree in Egypt that all new male born were to be killed. Jochebed had a sense that God had a plan for her son and with that wisdom she hid her son in a place where he could be found and not harmed. God used Moses later mightily. Hannah prayed for a son when no one else could understand the longing and the desire of her heart. She knew her desires could only be met by God, so year after year she prayed. Finally she prayed a prayer that was to God’s glory and God remembered her in her situation and blessed her. Her prayer was that God would bless her with a son and she would give him back to God. She asked for a son, God gave her a prophet. God used him mightily. How can we forget Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist, who was born to her in her old age, John became the voice in the wilderness preparing the way for the Lord. God used him mightily. Mary the mother of Jesus, a young woman yet pregnant with destiny. She was willing to take a stand to do what she was not qualified to do, raising the Son of God. There are other mothers in the bible worth mentioning, Eunice the mother of Timothy, Samson’s mother, Isaac’s mother, Joseph’s mother and many more. God entrusted these mothers with these children and you can see that each of them raised their children in the fear and the knowledge of God, advising, protecting, praying for them in advance, dedicating them back to God and standing by them through thick and thin. Raising these children was not an easy task and so was raising each of us.

I believe these men learnt to bless their mothers. Solomon took seriously the lessons on how to deal with parents, check out the book of Proverbs. His take on a virtuous woman, Proverbs 31:28, “Her children rise up and call her blessed; … ” 29″Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all.”

Just in America, over 40 million babies have been aborted since abortion was legalized in 1973, thank God your mom and mine did not abort us. They may have never known how we would turn out yet they trusted God to raise us up in spite of. What dads could not provide because of the way they are wired, mothers did. Those days dad had to be a way to work and provide for the family, mothers took the responsibility of instilling what dads had taught. I have deep honor and gratitude for my mom and I bless her. She may have not been perfect but she gave it all. I wish I was in a position to do everything for her to make her comfortable. Do you know that many have aborted the leaders of tomorrow, thank God these women in the bible did not abort.

How does this apply to us today, many times children forget the sacrifices their mothers have made for them over the years. Some even concentrate on what their mothers should have done better. It started long time ago and that is why Proverbs 30:11, “there is a generation that does not bless their mother”. Blessings are powerful and our mothers honor is in us blessing them. I don’t need to wait for mother’s day to bless my mom. You might say your mother does not deserve it, it’s not about deserving, it’s about honoring God by blessing your mother through prayers, support, encouragement, time, living a life pleasing to God due to how she raised you, doing things that will not shame her name, not causing her to worry and panic in this time of her life. She has done the sacrifice, let her now sit and enjoy the fruits of her labor. Happy mother’s day. Blessings Ev
